Our Religion

Umuebi people are Christians with majority of them Catholics constituting about 90% of the population while the remaining 10% is shared by other denominations such as Anglican Church, Assemblies of God Church and Christ Apostolic Church Umuebi Amuzu is the seat of Catholicism in the whole of Oke Clan (Oke- Ovoro Mbaise) which comprised Amuzu,Uvuru,Mbutu and Lorji. Oke Clan is amongst one of the 5(five) clan that make up Mbaise people. The first Mass ever celebrated in Oke Clan was celebrated on 15th of January 1921 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church Umuebi Amuzu by Rev. Fr. Daniel Walsh.Although earlier Catholic Evangelization have started from 1915 through the Catechetical activities of Pa Pius Akalazu and his team namely Pa Onyenowe Ekwueme, Pa Nworgu Achike,Pa Cole Onwubiko Pa Michael Ahiwe all of blessed memory. This light of Christ brought by these men through their contacts from Emekuku and Ogbor Nguru were the Good news of Christ first started in this part of the world was given a higher impetus through heroic “Martyrdom of the Six” namely Pa Ogueri Ekwueme, Pa Timorthy Ahunanya, Pa Cole Onwubiko, Pa Nwachukwu Emenogu, Pa Josiah Onughangwa,Pa Gabriel Afiri and Pa Job Amakulor all of blessed memory who were persecuted by the Colonial District Officers.

Umuebi Amuzu had their first fruit of vocation of an indigenous ordained catholic Priest in the person of Rev Fr. Donatus .E. Ibekwe. He was ordained on 19th January 1970. Since then till now Umuebi Village is blessed with more 5(five) indigenous Catholic Priest.

Prior to the Colonization by Britain and Conversion of our people to Christianity, Umuebi Villagers were mainly Traditional Religion worshippers. Our forbearers believe in God, the Creator (CHINEKE) and has myriad of mythology associated to their Traditional Religion.
